Free Education for PhD Student of Wind Energy at Austria

Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer, Graz University of Technology in the frame of an EraSME project of the European Union.

OPENING
We received support of research in the frame of the EraSME project „Small Wind Energy Converters“ for the development of small-scale wind energy converters. A total of 10 partners from Austria, Germany, and Slovenia contribute to this project. The Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer (ISW) of Graz University of Technology is one of three scientific partners in the consortium.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK

The aim of the project is to further develop an existing small-scale wind energy power station for special purposes. The technical challenge is to develop a flexibly applicable system for use under different conditions of climate (coastal, tropical, and mountainous zones), which can be adapted to varying conditions of wind. The aerodynamic investigations will be carried out by the ISW and the fk-Wind in Bremerhaven, a scientific partner in Germany.

The scientific work at the ISW includes numerical simulations and experiments with the wind tunnels of the institute to investigate and optimize the air flow around the converter at different stages of the development for the purpose of optimizing the system.

EDUCATION AND REQUIREMENTS

We request applications with certificates and CV from graduates in mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering-economics, process engineering, technical physics, and similar curricula of universities inside and outside Austria. We expect good knowledge in fluid mechanics. Experience with flow measuring techniques and with programming and the use of commercial CFD codes is of
advantage. The applicant should be interested in scientific research and industrial developments, and should have problem solving skills and be interested in the publication and presentation of scientific results. We offer a scientific education at a high level under competent supervision in cooperation with academic and industrial research groups.
