Free Education PhD Student Miniature RF technology for time-resolved electron microscopy at Eindhoven

The Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e) has the following vacancy
PhD Student Miniature RF technology for time-resolved electron microscopy (V34.303)
at the Coherence & Quantum Technology Group , Department of Applied Physics.

The research will be performed in the Coherence & Quantum Technology Group in the Department of Applied Physics of Eindhoven University of Technology. The project is part of a larger national collaboration involving Eindhoven University of Technology, Delft University of Technology, the FOM Institute AMOLF, and FEI Company in Eindhoven, http://www.fei.com, market leader in electron microscopy, in the framework of the FOM Industrial Partnership Program ‘Microscopy and modification of nano-structures with focused electron and ion beams’.
Tasks
With state-of-the-art electron microscopy it is nowadays possible to resolve individual atoms. The next challenge is to visualize the motion of individual atoms as well, for example during a chemical reaction or a phase transition, which occurs on timescales as short as 100 femtosecond. This exciting prospect, sometimes referred to as ‘the fourth dimension in electron microscopy’, is being pursued by our group in several ways.

You will develop radio-frequency (RF) technology which will allow the manipulation of electron beams at sub-picosecond timescales. This entails the production of ultra short electron bunches and controlling all three degrees of freedom of these bunches using ultrafast RF charged particle optics, possibly in combination with femtosecond lasers. The ultimate goal of the project is to develop miniature RF modules, which can be incorporated in existing electron microscopes.

Requirements
Interested candidates with a Master’s degree in Physics or equivalent are encouraged to apply. Experience with charged particle optics, RF technology or femtosecond lasers is desirable but not required.

Appointment and Salary
When fulfilling a PhD position at the FOM foundation, you will get the status of junior scientist.
You will have an employee status and can participate in all the employee benefits FOM offers. You will get a contract for 4 years. Your salary will be up to a maximum of 2,558 euro gross per month.

You are supposed to have a thesis finished at the end of your four year term with FOM.

A training programme is part of the agreement. You and your supervisor will make up a plan for the additional education and supervising that you specifically need. This plan also defines which teaching activities you will be responsible (up to a maximum of 10% of your time). The conditions of employment of the FOM-foundation are laid down in the Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres (CAO-Onderzoekinstellingen), more exclusive information is available at this website under Personeelsinformatie (in Dutch) or under Personnel (in English).

General information about working at FOM can be found in the English part of this website under Personnel
