Free Education PhD Student “Control of manufacturing and logistical networks” at Universiteit Eindhoven

The Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e) has the following vacancy
PhD Student “Control of manufacturing and logistical networks” (V35.392)
at Systems Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering considers as the core of their activities design, realization and analysis of new products, processes and materials. Besides the basis of (solid and fluid) mechanics, materials, control and thermodynamics, parts of mathematics, physics, chemistry and computing science are important supporting tools. The field is explored by a combination of modeling using fundamental concepts and applied engineering and technology. Automotive Engineering Science and Micro- & Nano-Scale Engineering are important departemental themes. The Mechanical Engineering Department comprises about 1000 students and 250 staff members.
The Systems Engineering Group performs research to gain insight in the field of Systems Engineering, makes the results accessible to other research groups. The Systems Engineering Group has long-term contacts with industry to validate, and to utilize the results of their research. In the framework of the European FP7 project “Control for coordination”, the Systems Engineering group is looking for a PhD student to work in the exciting field of control of manufacturing and logistical networks.

To survive and prosper industrial companies should be competitive and respond quickly to changes in the market demand. On the other hand, we live in the world of limited resources that imposes severe restrictions on the ability of companies to respond to rapid changes in the market. Therefore, a proper production planning becomes a key competitive factor for modern companies. The companies should allocate their resources and/or capacity to produce products efficiently. This is a difficult problem since the manufacturing systems are complex and becoming more sophisticated as technology develops.
This project is aimed at developing theory that can be utilized when one has to solve the production planning problem. A significant part of the study will be directed towards questions of practical implementation.
