Free Education for Postdoctoral researchers in interdisciplinary mathematics at Sweden

The Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematics in Uppsala facilitates novel and exciting joint research between the mathematical sciences and other disciplines and industry. Its main aim is to engage mathematics directly in science by using mathematics to understand real world systems. The centre’s core members come from the mathematics department, the scientific computing group and the systems and control group in Uppsala University. Through the centre, we provide education and expertise in mathematical modelling and computer simulation. More information can be found on www.math.uu.se/cim/index.html

Description of the positions:
We are announcing two postdoctoral positions associated with the CIM. Each postdoctoral researcher will work on an interdisciplinary mathematics project with two supervisors. At least one supervisor will be from mathematics department or one of the above mentioned groups and the other will preferably come from another department at Uppsala University. They will be housed in the mathematics department. The work consists of at least 80 % research and up to 20 % teaching.

Period of employment: The postdoctoral positions are for two years.

Eligibility:
To be eligible for a position as postdoctoral researcher the applicant ’s Ph.D. degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application date; however, periods of sick leave, parental leave, and military service are deducted from the three-years period. Moreover, it is required that the candidate have a strong background in mathematics and/or mathematical modelling, e.g. with PhD exam in mathematics or the related research areas mentioned above, but also applicants with Ph.D. exams from other research areas with high mathematical content like image analysis, theoretical biology and theoretical physics can be elected.

Ranking criteria:
In ranking eligible candidates, special importance will be given to scientific skills and research record. The degree of relevance of the proposed research of the applicant to the research within centre of interdisciplinary mathematics is also very important.

In filling these positions the university aims to recruit persons who, in the combined evaluation of competence, skills and documented qualifications, are judged most suitable to carry out and develop the work-in-hand. It is also important that the persons can contribute to a positive development of the centre of interdisciplinary mathematics and the involved departments at Uppsala University.

The university is striving for a more even gender balance in its research and teaching staff, and therefore women are especially invited to apply for these positions.

Personal circumstances that may be of positive relevance in merit evaluation, for example parental leave, should be mentioned in CV.

How to apply:
The application must include the following documents in 4 copies: an attested Curriculum Vitae (CV) with a complete list of scientific works, transcript of the PhD degree, copies of representative publications (at most 5), a description of the suggested research work (including the names and departments of the involved supervisors) including a brief description of the applicants previous work related to the suggested project (not more than 4 A4 pages) , and names and email addresses of two suggested referees of the application.
