Free Education for Industry-Ph.D. student position in Molecular Biotechnology at Sweden

Application procedure, extended date of application

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology includes eight programs and about 130 employees. The Molecular Biology Program is involved in the basic and applied research on fundamental cellular processes in bacteria. This program consists of, at present, four research groups, has approximately 20 employees of which 9 are PhD students. The research of the groups lead by Prof. Måns Ehrenberg and Assoc. Prof. Suparna Sanyal is focussed on protein synthesis in bacteria.

Uppsala University hereby declares the following position, financed by the Swedish Research Council, to be open for application:

Industry-Ph.D. student position in Molecular Biotechnology focused on the development of an optimised cell-free system for in vitro protein synthesis

at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology. The candidate will be recruited through 3H-Biomedical AB, Uppsala , the industri-partner of the Ehrenberg and Sanyal groups in this project. The position is available immediately.

The objective of the project is to develop an optimized system for rapid and large scale in vitro synthesis of functional proteins, based on purified components from the translational machinery of E. coli. Måns Ehrenberg’s group is one of the pioneers in this field. A similar but somewhat simpler system for the synthesis of short-peptides, is regularly used by the researchers of the Ehrenberg and Sanyal groups for in depth studies of the mechanism of protein synthesis.

Candidates with an academic degree at the Masters level in molecular biotechnology, biology or chemistry or the equivalent are invited to apply. A good background in molecular biology (both theoretical and experimental) is a merit. The candidate should have interest in applied science. Hands-on experience and expertise in the over-expression and purification of proteins using different methods of column chromatography is required. In addition, experience in working with ribosomes and RNA will be a merit. The candidate should have good social competence and be able to function in an international research environment. The PhD student will be expected to teach and/or supervise during lab courses about 20% of time, during a PhD period of five years.

The rules governing this process of enregistering as a Ph.D. student can be found (in Swedish) in Högskoleförordningen 5 kap 1-7 §§. Local rules apply for salaries.

Applications should include a CV, a brief description of research interests and past research experiences, copies of exam-certificates, and grades, a copy of your Master thesis (or a summary) and other relevant documents. The candidates are encouraged to provide letter(s) of recommendation and contact information to reference persons.

Information: More information can be obtained from Docent Suparna Sanyal, tel +46 18-471 4220, e-mail: suparna.sanyal@icm.uu.se and/or Prof. Måns Ehrenberg, tel +46 18-471 4213, e-mail: ehrenberg@xray.bmc.uu.se . More information about the Ehrenberg- and Sanyal- groups’ profile and the molecular biology program can be found at the website at http://www.icm.uu.se/molbio/.

The application must be submitted no later than May 26, 2008 to: The Registrar, UFV-PA 2008/978, Uppsala universitet, Box 256, 751 05 UPPSAL, Sweden . Fax +46 18-471 2000 or e-mail: registrator@uu.se. If you apply by e-mail or fax you will have to send the paper version as well at the latest one week after application deadline.
