PhD Opportunity in Low-head Hydropower at UNESCO-IHE, Delft

UNESCO-IHE’s Department of Water Engineering has the opportunity for a suitably qualified student to study for a PhD on Low-head Hydropower. The work is part of a European Union project led at UNESCO-IHE by Nigel Wright, Professor of Hydraulic Engineering and River Basin Development.

The project will involve the use and developed of advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics to optimise turbines used in Low-head Hydropower. Use will be made of commercially available software with suitable adaptation and simulations will be carried out on a dedicated PC cluster. Investigation is also required on the development and implementation of the technology for developing countries.

The project covers tuition fees and a maintenance allowance and is open to students of any nationality. The successful applicant will need to satisfy the admission regulations of UNESCO-IHE http://www.unesco-ihe.org/education/prospective_students/

). The PhD will be awarded jointly with Delft University of Technology.

Candidates are required to have a Masters degree in a relevant subject. Experience in numerical modelling is highly desirable. Good skills in written and verbal presentation in English are required.
