Free Education PhD Scholarship in Human Genomic Variation at University of Denmark

A PhD scholarship is available at Center for Biological Sequence Analysis, Department of Systems Biology, Technical University of Denmark from the 1st of April 2008 or earliest thereafter.
Apply before: 10.03.2008 at 12:00 (noon)

A 3-year PhD scholarship is available at Center for Biological Sequence Analysis, Department of Systems Biology, Technical University of Denmark from the 1st of April 2008 or earliest thereafter.
Center for Biological Sequence Analysis conducts basic research in the field of bioinformatics and systems biology and consists of +100 employees with a highly multi-disciplinary profile (molecular biologists, biochemists, medical doctors, physicists, computer scientists, and technical staff). The center represents one of the largest bioinformatics groups in academia in Europe.

The project: The increasing amount of human DNA sequence data reveals that human genomic variation is widespread even within phenotypically normal individuals. Studying this variation is of great interest, since it is believed to play important roles in the development of many human diseases. Likewise, understanding genomic variation may enable us to control the immune system and guide it into favourable responses against pathogens and cancer. The successful applicant will initially be working within the field of immunological bioinformatics on a project aiming at identifying minor Histocompatibility Antigens (mHags). The project is part of a larger research project termed “Disease Gene Finding, Somatic Mutations, and Vaccine Design”, which is financed by the Danish Research Council for Technology and Production Sciences. The project is carried out in close collaboration with the University of Copenhagen and a clinical department at Rigshospitalet.

Candidates should have a master’s degree in bioinformatics, biology, biochemistry, engineering, computer science, or a similar degree. It is essential that the applicant has strong computational skills and a fundamental understanding of biology. Preferably, the applicant is also knowledgeable within the field of immunology. The applicant must be fluent in written as well as spoken English.

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. Information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies is included in the general rules of DTU, which may be obtained by application to the PhD programme office at tel: +45 45 25 11 76 or +45 45 25 11 77.

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students.

Further information may be obtained from Postdoc Mette Voldby Larsen, tel: +45 45 25 24 25 or Professor and Center Director Søren Brunak, tel: +45 45 25 24 77.

Applications with enclosures should be submitted online by using the “Apply for this job online” button at the foot of this page or mailed to metteb@cbs.dtu.dk. Applications must include a curriculum vitae and documentation of a completed master’s degree.

Applications should be submitted in English no later than 10. March 2008 at 12.00 noon.

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, race, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply.
